Flooring Installation in Sumner, WA
Sumner has two very different flooring situations depending on which part of town you live in. Downtown and the older neighborhoods near the train station have homes from the 1950s through 1970s with a mix of hardwood, sheet vinyl, and carpet that has been there for decades. East Sumner's newer developments along the valley floor were built with builder-grade carpet and laminate that wears out after 10 to 15 years. I work on both sides of town regularly, and each one requires a different approach. In older Sumner homes, I spend more time on subfloor prep. In newer ones, the subfloor is usually fine and the focus is on choosing the right product.
LVP is the most popular choice for my Sumner customers, and I install it in about 7 out of every 10 flooring projects here. The valley location means some Sumner homes deal with higher humidity in crawl spaces, which can affect subfloor moisture levels. I test every subfloor before installation and will not lay flooring over a slab or subfloor that reads above 6% moisture content. For Sumner homes with concrete slabs, I apply a moisture barrier before installing LVP or use a product with an attached vapor barrier. In bathrooms, I recommend porcelain tile because it handles water better than any other option. A full-home flooring replacement in a typical 1,400 square foot Sumner home costs between $10,000 and $19,000. More details on materials and the installation process are on my flooring installation page.
Flooring permits in Sumner go through Pierce County. Standard flooring replacement does not require a permit, but if I discover subfloor damage that needs structural repair, like replacing joists or adding blocking, I pull a permit through Pierce County Planning and Public Works and schedule the necessary inspections. I have handled over 20 flooring projects in the Sumner area since 2018 and know exactly what to expect in each era of construction.
